Steal the bathroom organization habits of the chillest woman we know

If anyone knows the importance of having a chill space, it’s Cyndi Ramirez.

She’s the mastermind behind one of  New York City’s buzziest beauty locales, Chillhouse, where you’re pretty much guaranteed to run into someone whose skin-care routine you’ve stalked on Instagram. The nail-salon-meets-healthy-cafe is the epitome if #goodvibesonly. So, when she offered to share some tips on how to create a chill AF apartment bathroom in honor of her partnership with dwell and Build.com, I had to pick her brain.

I know, I know—hanging out in an apartment bathroom may not exactly have the same appeal as, say, a cool spa in Soho, but there’s something to be said about designing a space that you actually want to spend time in. After all, isn’t that where most of the magic (otherwise known as “self care“) happens?

Steal Ramirez’s bathroom organization tips, below, for a space that will actually make you want to un-plug during your PM routine—whether or not you have space for a beauty bar cart to store the products in.

The perfect mirror: “My sacred nightly beauty routine occurs in the bathroom, so it’s important to have the right lighting in order to see my skin and the products I’m using,” says Ramirez, who opted for this pick as the mirror of her dreams. “I’m a sucker for LED lighting lately and this mirror has a cool, clean vibe, while giving off just the right amount of light just before bed.”

A bathmat you’re actually excited to step on: There’s nothing worse than getting out of the shower and planting your feet on the cold bathroom floor, so why not make the experience slightly more enjoyable for yourself? “Nothing warms up your bathroom quite like a cozy bathmat,” says Ramirez, noting that she’s obsessed with this particular style.

The right shade of paint: “Your bathroom oasis should be relaxing, stylish, and most importantly comfortable,” says Ramirez. “A relaxing sand hue tackles all of that while providing a soothing pop of color.” If you aren’t allowed to paint (hey there, fellow renters), slap on some temporary peel-and-stick wallpaper for the same effect, which you can peel up the minute you’re ready to move out.

A little greenery: That #plantladylife doesn’t need to be limited to the kitchen, bedroom, or living room. “Keep the lush vibes alive in your bathroom, too,” says Ramirez, who’s a fan of The Sill for “modern plants of all sizes.” Shower plants—which are exactly what they sound like—are also a great way to make the most underrated zen space in your home feel like a lush secret garden.

A beauty bar cart: Um, why have we never thought of using a bar cart for our beauty products before?  “I love storage where you can display all your prized possessions and mine just happen to be all my beauty products,” she says. “For the bathroom specifically, I would put all my nighttime and masking products on the top shelf of this cart and the bottom, I’d stack my hair products.” A few products she swears by? The Then I Met You Cleansing Duo ($68) (which she calls “game changers”), this terry headband (perfect for washing your face), and Plant Apothecary’s BE WELL body wash ($18), which has relaxing essential oils like eucalyptus, bergamot, sandalwood, and cedar.
