This Simple, Stylist-Approved Trick Will Make Your Blowout Last All Day—Even in Peak Humidity

POV: You got up 45 minutes early to perfect a bouncy, ’90s-supermodel blowout only to have it fall out by lunchtime—cue the inner rage. In the midst of peak-July humidity, this scenario feels unavoidable, but according to stylists, it doesn’t have to be. The secret? Bobby pins.

During a recent appointment with celebrity stylist and Dyson brand ambassador Matthew Collins, we learned that the trick to making any hairstyle last is to let it set (aka cool) in the form you want it to stay in all day. To really help hold things in place, he—along with multiple other stylists we spoke to—suggests holding your curls up with bobby pins until they cool.

“As you’re drying your hair, take each individual curl, wind it up using your finger, and pin it down with a bobby pin,” says Courtney Resch, stylist and owner of Ashen Salon. This will hold your curls into place as they set, which will better prevent them from falling out during the day—and it’s worth noting that the trick works with everything from ringlets to barrel curls to beach waves.

You can let your hair cool on its own, or take things to the next level by giving each section a blast with your blowdryer’s cool setting. The important thing is that your curls are held in place while they lose heat, which is where the bobby pins come into play. The key, according to Resch, is allowing the curl to cool down in the way you want it to stay. If it’s cooling as it’s falling, it will continue to fall. “It feels tedious at first, but it seriously helps when the weather is humid, or if you struggle with how long your blowout is lasting,” she says.
