Very few, if any, garments are less confidence-inducing than a bralette (in my opinion). Though you can find some that will (moderately) support your girls, most of the time I’d rather wear an underwire-clad option. Lively, however, has generated hordes of dedicated cyber fans with its line of comfortable, size-inclusive (and new-mom-inclusive!), supportive bralettes. And today the brand is launching its first bandeau-style option.
A Lively rep told me that when it first rolled out its strapless bras, the garments almost immediately went on back order—which inspired the brand to conjure this new take. The goal was to eliminate the often-uncomfortable underwire feature and to create something that would conform to the person wearing it.
The new strapless bandeau retails at $35 and, for now, comes in black and nude, in sizes ranging from extra-small to large (30A to 38D). Full disclosure: I do not mind underwire and have yet to find a strapless bra that I really love. Also, I’m not entirely a fan of the bandeau style because it tends to leave me with an unfortunate uniboob. But, alas, I tried this new style in a size large and kept an open mind.
The verdict? This bandeau is surprisingly supportive—and not just as a bandeau, but for any strapless bra I’ve tried. The slip-on bra has thick and wide elastic on the bottom, which prevents it from moving up and down. The top of the bandeau is also lined with that slightly sticky nameless clear stuff that holds the top half in place and is less irritating than I expected, honestly. The (removable) pads inside the bandeau are actually useful, as they add the structure that’s required for larger cup sizes.
Additional sizing for bigger cups (which Lively offers for its other bralettes) would be helpful. But as someone who is usually a 36DD, I was pretty comfortable and surprised by the support the bandeau provided. I’m not sure I’d spend a whole day in it at the office, but come the warmer weather, I’m fairly confident I’ll wear this on nights out, or when layering sheer tops.
