Mizani’s New Hair-Care Products Got My 4C Curls Just as Straight as a Salon-Grade Silk Press

Silk press season is upon us and I’m taking full advantage. I love wearing my hair straight, but have had a hard time getting it to my standards at home. For years, my straightening job was never as good as a professional one, no matter what products I used. That was until the Mizani Press Agent line entered my life. It gets my hair straight, silky, and shiny with very little effort.

The Mizani Press Agent collection works for all hair types—four words that can elicit an eye-roll from anyone with textured hair. But, my now-pin-straight 4C hair and I are here to tell you it’s not a lie. The line comprises four products: a shampoo, conditioner, styling cream, and styling serum. I love the simplicity. No deep conditioning, no special sprays, just four products that get the job done.

I start my routine with a lather-rinse-repeat using the Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Sulfate-Free Shampoo ($20). Because the cream and serum are heat protectants, they contain silicones—which is fine, as long as I’m properly and regularly cleansing my hair. Next, I apply the Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Sulfate-Free Conditioner ($22), which only needs three minutes to work its magic.

After the shower, I lightly towel-dry my hair using an Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel ($30), which is made with a microfiber fabric that’s gentler than that of your standard towel and helps stave off frizz and breakage. Next up comes the Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Raincoat Styling Cream ($22) and the Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Raincoat Styling Serum ($22). Generally, you mix two parts of the cream with one part of the serum in your hands and then apply it to your hair starting at the ends and working to your roots. But, according to Mizani artist Al Campbell, the ratios should change based on your hair’s porosity, or its ability to accept and hold onto products and moisture. “For someone with high porosity hair we recommend using equal parts,” says Campbell. “For low porosity hair, do three parts cream to one part serum.” You can also use the serum on its own for flyaways.

Once I brush the products in to ensure they’re evenly distributed and I use the comb attachment on my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($399) to blow out my hair before silking it with the Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener ($499). These Dyson tools have honestly made such a difference in my straightening routine, and pairing them with the Mizani Press Agent line is *chef’s kiss.* However, I notice a difference in the way my hair feels straight out of the shower after using the shampoo and conditioner, so I know the line is working hard on its own independent of my Dyson tools.
