From the squeaky clean outsole to the stack of fresh cushion, there's no denying that a new pair of running shoes is an exciting purchase. But unless you're sticking with the newest iteration of a style you've worn before, there's also no denying that shopping for a completely new pair of kicks can be a little overwhelming. After all, there's so much to consider—the drop, the cushion, the support, whether you pronate or not—that sometimes scouring the internet for the right running shoe can feel like endlessly swiping through a dating app.
Enter the new Nike Running Shoe Finder, which aims to take the guesswork out of shoe shopping. The tool takes you through a set of questions to pair you with one of the brand's many running and walking sneakers, and is super easy (and honestly kinda fun??) to use. Read on to learn how it works, then explore a few Nike styles you might get matched with.
How does Nike Running Shoe Finder work?
It really couldn't be easier. The first question the Nike Running Shoe Finder will ask is whether you're looking for a walking shoe or a running shoe—this is important because while some of the styles are suited for both walkers and runners alike, the running shoe questionnaire is a little more detailed.
If you're a walker, you'll get to skip some running-specific queries and instead focus on two simple questions: why you're walking (to gauge your frequency and experience) and whether you prefer supportive or soft cushioning in your shoe.
In my first go-round with the Shoe Finder, I selected "Walking" and answered those two questions based on my personal preferences. At the end of the (very quick) survey, I was pleased to find that Nike recommended not just one pair of sneakers, but three. The Nike Motiva was my top match based on my inputs, but the Shoe Finder also provided two more options I could compare side-by-side on the page. When I scrolled down, I was able to see how each shoe stacked up in terms of cushion, weight, and heel-to-toe drop, and I could even read customer reviews for each style.

Shoe Finder questions for runners
As I mentioned above, the questionnaire is a little more detailed for runners, especially folks who compete in races or track events. Here are a few of the questions you should be prepared to answer:
- What surface do you run on (road, track, trail, or cross-country)? Depending on your answer, you might get additional questions about the exact type of terrain you frequent, which helps the Shoe Finder narrow down what type of traction you'll need (or whether you need track shoes with cleats).
- Are you an everyday runner or a racer? If you're a racer, you'll be asked if you want training shoes or race-day shoes (or both). The questionnaire will also want to know about your preferred race distance.
- What feel do you prefer? If you're an everyday runner looking for a training shoe, the Shoe Finder will ask if you prioritize supportive cushioning (for stability), responsive cushioning (for quicker turnover), or maximum cushioning (for softer landings).
The second time I completed the questionnaire, I focused on my running goals. I was happy to see another three options I could compare side-by-side, although it wasn't exactly clear to me why I'd pick the Nike Pegasus 41 over the Nike Pegasus Plus. In fact, once I read the weight difference between the two, I was more drawn to the Pegasus Plus (which was my second match, not the top).

The good news is that Nike has a generous 60-day return policy, so if the shoe doesn't fit (both literally and figuratively), you can easily return it or swap it out for the Shoe Finder's runner-up pick. Plus, Nike offers free shipping for orders over $50, as well as in-store pickup options.
