Once you’ve convinced yourself to bundle up, you’re faced with one more minor issue: Walking in the winter can be treacherous. But according to podiatrist Elizabeth Bass Daughtry, DPM, your shoes can make all the difference when it comes to successful, safe, and comfortable winter strolls.
Whether you’re braving icy sidewalks or meandering through snowy parks, Dr. Daughtry says there are a few boxes your winter walking shoes should check: They should prioritize shock absorption and traction, especially in the heel, and should be made of waterproof, breathable materials. A wide toe box and a lightweight, slip-resistant rubber outsole are also key.
And, just like in every season, proper support is a must—especially if you deal with foot issues like plantar fasciitis or bunions. To avoid crowding your feet, “look for shoes with adequate arch support and shoes that are wide enough for the bunion deformity or flat-foot structure,” Dr. Daughtry says. “Shoes with velcro and laces are great options to adjust for foot problems—or add orthotics or other arch supports as needed.”
