“Good arch support is a must for any high-quality shoe, and slippers are no exception,” says Velimir Petkov, DPM, board-certified podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Premier Podiatry, as it “cradles the arch and can prevent tendinitis and heel pain, which are some of the most common symptoms of collapsing arches.” Brad Schaeffer, DPM, board-certified foot surgeon and owner of Central Park Sole in New York City, agrees: “Arch support is the most important thing to look for when buying shoes.”

Gregory Alvarez, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified podiatrist at Ankle & Foot Centers of America, agrees that “a thick and firm sole” is ideal, and he also recommends looking for options made from materials like memory or latex foam for additional cushioning and support. He adds that slippers with removable arch-support insoles can also provide wearers with support and can easily be replaced when needed—or when they start to wear out. Dr. Schaeffer echoes, “I recommend my patient use insoles like Dr. Scholl’s Orthotic Insoles ($13) in their shoes for extra arch support, especially if shoes come with a flat factory-made insole.”
