When you live in an urban center, it can be easy to forget some of the simple treasures of the quiet life that you’re sacrificing: peaceful silence, space to roam, and the glimmering, star-filled night sky, to name a few. Big metropolitan hubs of life also tend to have higher rates light pollution (light has been shown to be both good and bad for you). It’s no wonder, then, that travelers are seeking out darker skies to recharge their batteries.
The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding and preserving dark skies, Afar reports. “People are interested in getting out of the city environments they’re in all the time and into more natural spaces that are very different from the everyday lives they live,” said John Barentine, the program director at IDA.
IDA keeps a digital catalog of the 100 places around the world they’ve designated as “dark-sky sites,” and as you might imagine, some of these locales are über serene. Check out the selection of Airbnbs below, all located in or near dark-sky approved stargazing spots.
