When you live in an urban center, it can be easy to forget some of the simple treasures of the quiet life that you’re sacrificing: peaceful silence, space to roam, and the glimmering, star-filled night sky, to name a few. It’s no wonder, then, that travelers are seeking out darker skies to recharge their batteries.

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding and preserving dark skies, Afar reports. “People are interested in getting out of the city environments they’re in all the time and into more natural spaces that are very different from the everyday lives they live,” said John Barentine, the program director at IDA.
