If you have fine hair, celebrity hairstylist Marcia Lee suggests trying the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. “It’s light, so it’s great for fine hair and can be built up,” she says.

“Definitely give the canister a couple of good shakes [before applying. Then] lift your hair, paying attention to the crown of your head, and mist evenly through the crown, mid-length, and ends.” For even more va-va-voom action, she says to flip your head over and continue spritzing. “Give your roots a good massage and tousle [your hair], creating that done but undone style,” she instructs. “Bed head at its best with a fresh crisp scent.”

When celeb stylist and business owner Andrew Fitzsimons isn’t not reaching for his own dry shampoo (keep scrolling if you want to know more), he admits that a certain Target staple is one of his faves. “Another solid option I find myself reaching for is the Kristin Ess Dry Shampoo,” Fitzsimons reveals. “This dry shampoo leaves the hair looking fresh and clean, while still being fully volumized. I also love that it has a shiny effect, so it creates voluptuous hair with an effervescent shine.”

R+Co BLEU Retroactive Dry Shampoo — $53.00

Love the idea of a second-day ‘do that’s voluminous and shiny in all the best ways? Celebrity Stylist and Co-Founder of R+Co, Garren, offers up his very own R+Co BLEU Retroactive Dry Shampoo.

“It’s [one of] the only dry shampoos that creates shine in the hair,” he says. “It gives you the volume and the movement you want, but it also won’t create a dulling effect on the hair.” For the best results, he says to spray Retroactive on upside down. “Get it into the roots to remove excess oil,” he says. “Take a blow dryer, and with cold air, blow through the hair, and flip hair upside down for more volume. Next, throw [your] hair back and use your fingers or a vent brush to brush through the hair. The product will be evenly distributed and it will clean out the oil, so your hair doesn’t go flat. Just make sure you use cold air, not hot.”

Sachajuan Dry Powder Shampoo — $39.00

Designed to actually be volumizing, it’s no wonder Cook can’t get enough of this dry shampoo. “The Sachajuan Volumizing Dry Shampoo adds the most texture and grip to the hair of all [my favorite dry shampoos], so if you like a clean-feeling dry shampoo this is not the one,” he shares. “However, if you have limp, fine hair or need a little grip for styling, this is perfect.” Best of all, this dry shampoo comes in light and dark options, so you don’t have to worry about any dreaded white residue.

Amika Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo — $26.00

For lifted, clean-feeling hair post-spritz, Cook recommends adding the Amika Dry Shampoo to your haircare regimen. “Amika is the cleanest feeling of traditional dry shampoo,” he says. “This is great because the enemy of volume is greasy hair, so [soaking] that up will refresh the roots and add lift and life back to the hair.”

Act+Acre Plant-Based Dry Shampoo — $22.00

If you prefer not to use aerosols in your haircare routine, Brook says that the Act+Acre Plant-Based Dry Shampoo is a solid choice. “This one is compact, so it’s easy to slip into your bag for travel,” she says. “The size of the nozzle distributes the product in a smaller area making it great for use if you’re styling (braids or ponytails) and want more volume or grip[, as well].”

Sam McKnight 'Lazy Girl' Dry Shampoo — $28.00

Another of Cook’s go-to dry shampoos when looking to create volume is the Sam McKnight Dry Shampoo. “It is just fantastic; it leaves a mostly clean feeling with a barely-there hint of grit which adds that extra texture and volume,” he says. “This is best applied six to 12 inches away in sections to make sure the root of the whole head receives the product. Then brushing through or even blow-drying on cool can help distribute and blend product and add lift.”

Batiste Original Dry Shampoo — $19.00

An oldie but a goodie—and Lee agrees. “My old-school favorite is Batiste Dry Shampoo—the one that really started it all,” she says.

Andrew Fitzsimons Hair Discreet AF Dry Shampoo — $14.00

Andrew Fitzsimons has used dozens of different dry shampoos through his line of work with celebs like Khloe Kardashian and Megan Fox. However, since launching his own haircare brand, he can’t get enough of his eponymous Discreet AF Dry Shampoo. The reason? “It absorbs oils without traces of powder, and the dispersion of powder onto the hair is so slim, yet it does wonders in creating volume—it’s truly discreet,” he says.

How to apply dry shampoo like a pro

Now that you know which volumizing dry shampoos to reach for when hoping for Dolly Parton-inspired hair height, you’ll also want to brush up on how to apply the product in the first place. “When using dry shampoo (especially the more natural ingredient ones) be sure to shake the can first before you spray,” Brook says. “This keeps the product from coming out white.”

After shaking your can, she says to divide your hair in sections and spray dry shampoo between the layers of hair. Don’t just let it sit there, though. Instead, massage it in to help it soak up as much oil as possible and to get rid of any white residue in the process. “One of my favorite tricks is to spray dry shampoo on a boar brush and then brush through areas that I want more volume,” Brook adds. “This helps target the exact area you want without adding product to other areas of your hair.”
