You’d think that after winning two gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics and, in doing so, shattering her own world record, Sydney McLaughlin would be ready to hit pause for a minute. But the international track superstar is slowing down any time soon. On Tuesday, New Balance revealed a brand-new collection designed in partnership with McLaughlin, indicating she’s been very busy since wowing the world.
The New Balance x Sydney Signature Collection is a first for the young Olympian (who is also of Well+Good’s 2021 Changemakers). From running sneakers to T-shirts, the collection highlights her metamorphosis from breakout athlete in New Jersey to reigning track champion and world record holder.
“It’s a dream come true to create my first signature collection with New Balance, and to truly be part of the process from start to finish,” McLaughlin, 22, said in a press release. “Many of the design elements reflect my growth as an athlete but more importantly as a human being, and I hope these looks inspire others to search inwards and show up as the best version of themselves.”
Throughout the entire collaboration, McLaughlin’s deign influence lends itself to collection of sleek, clean silhouettes, high-tech materials (primarily sourced from recycled fabrics) and dark, edgy colors that elevate traditional performance apparel to the next level. Subtle design elements such as a butterfly symbolizing her evolution as an athlete, and her personal motto (“Be the first you”) inspire individuality and authenticity in the wearers themselves.
“This collection is all about staying true to yourself with pieces that inspire people to be authentically true to who they are,” McLaughlin said.
