Nearly 30 years after its launch, Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat All-Over Brightening Pen is found in beauty bags throughout the world. The product has seen it all: the darkly lined, glossy lips of the ’90s; the frosted lids of the 2000s; the contoured cheeks of the 2010s; and now the five-minute makeup trend made even more popular after a year spent on video calls. What allows YSL’s pen to stand the test of time is the fact that it works.
Not quite a concealer, the Touche Éclat brightening pen adds weightless brightness exactly where you need it, helping you look effortlessly awake in seconds, according to Sephora beauty director Myiesha Sewell.

“Whenever you’re applying a concealer or you’re like, ‘I just want to brighten the area,’ do you really need coverage there, or do you just need brightness?” she says in a YouTube video. “I see, a lot of times, people highlight and contour with something so heavy after they put on a full-coverage foundation. I’m like, you just need brightness, you don’t need coverage so this is a really great option for that.”
Click the end of the YSL Touche Éclat brightening pen to allow the product to flow through an attached applicator brush. The formula is lightweight with a radiant finish in each of its 14 shades. It contains vitamin E and Ruscus extract to help you look more awake, hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and make it look plumper, and Moroccan calendula extract to soothe and protect the skin. Sheer and shimmer-free, it contains light-reflecting technology to help you look instantly glowy. You can use it on bare skin or on top of makeup.
Jeffrey English, a Sephora Pro makeup artist, adds that the Touche Éclat brightening pen is great for reawaken concealer when it has been on for a bit. “You can sort of brush it under the eye and since it’s a really lightweight serum texture, it’s not going to add any extra coverage per se, it’s just going to kind of smooth out the coverage that’s already there, and that that fluidity is going to wake up the concealers,” he says in the video.
When shopping the pen, you want to choose a shade that is as close as possible to your skin tone, makeup artist and former director of education and events at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté David Winters explains in a video on Sephora’s website. To apply, use the attached brush to apply the product where you want it and for the fullest possible coverage, just tap it into your skin with your fingers to blend it out, he says.
