It’s hard to deny the irresistibility of jelly-like textures. Remember the enticingly fun-to-play-with Silly Putty? Welp, here’s some good news: The fun doesn’t have to stop after your youth. There’s currently a rise in jelly cleansers—which are here to make washing your face feel like way less of a chore (say what?).
“The texture of jelly cleansers is unique,” says Ginger King, a cosmetic chemist and president and CEO of Grace Kingdom Beauty. “Either natural or synthetic gum or polymer is used to create the texture, which feels refreshing and fun on your skin.” Somewhere between a gel cleanser and old-school slime, these jelly cleansers are bouncy on the skin and create a nice lather when you add water.
Unsurprisingly, the eccentric texture hails from South Korea—the land of inventive beauty products. “We believe skin care shouldn’t be a chore, but rather your daily skin routine should be ‘skintertainment,'” note Christine Chang and Sarah Lee, co-founders of Glow Recipe, a K-beauty site and beauty brand. “We all should enjoy taking care of our skin, and the jelly texture gives the cleansing step that [fun factor].”

Not only are the cleansers loads of fun to use, but the gel consistency is multitasking: “These hydrate and clean, and many jelly cleansers are loaded with skin-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid and botanical extracts that make the texture inherently less runny,” they add.

Though the texture makes things interesting, that’s not to say that it’s better than your milky, gel, or oil-based options out there. King, Lee, and Chang all note that they may not be sufficient when it comes to removing really heavy makeup (so maybe make that an excuse to double cleanse).
