Weight Watchers teams up with Fitbit

Ever since Weight Watchers overhauled its point system a few years ago and dropped its outdated calorie-is-a-calorie mindset (i.e. finally making a distinction between eating an Oreo versus an apple), the diet has put way more of an emphasis on whole, healthy foods—and exercise.

Now, the brand is teaming up with Fitbit—and all of Fitbit’s devices will be available at Weight Watchers meetings and on its website, just in time for what’s probably one of Weight Watcher’s busiest months of the year.

The Fitbit trackers can also conveniently sync up to your Weight Watchers app, making it easier to track your activities, thus scoring some activity points along the way (basically you get to eat a little more when you exercise). You can also sync up other trackers like Jawbone.

“Weight Watchers helps people make better food decisions, and devices and apps monitor activity. Integrating them can equip people with an ideal combination of resources to achieve their goals,” says Gary Foster, Ph.D., chief scientific officer at Weight Watchers.

Between Weight Watchers tracking system, this new Fitbit partnership, and its new coach program (a feature Weight Watchers recently introduced which lets you call a coach to get real-time feedback and encouragement), Weight Watchers appears to be building in more and more layers of accountability, making the journey to getting healthy much more, well, healthy. —Molly Gallagher
