Your astrological birth chart holds a wealth of insight into what makes you, you. Your communication style, your passions, your motivations, and your outlook on life can all be deciphered in the placements of your chart—as can the ways in which you’re likely to operate in relationships. Indeed, your birth chart can shed light on your compatibility with other zodiac signs, including how you’re likely to perceive potential friends and lovers and parent-child compatibility, too.

To begin unpacking your relationship with your parents, you’ll want to look at your sun sign (aka the sign you’d read a horoscope for) and your moon sign, says astrologer Kirah Tabourn, host of the podcast Cosmic Guidance for All and cofounder of astrology dating app Stars Align. Where the sun typically represents the father in astrology, the moon usually represents the mother. But “removing the gender binary from the equation, the sun is also often seen as representing the more visible or external parent, who might be more career-oriented, and the moon can represent the more nurturing parental type,” she says.

Other chart placements (like the sign of your fourth astrological house) can offer further insight into how you perceive your parent(s) and the roles they may play in the plot of your life (more on that below). But in order to determine your parent-child compatibility with your own parents, you’ll need to examine parts of their charts, too.

As with any exercise in astrological compatibility, you’ll want to look at their “big three,” says astrologer Babs Cheung. That means considering their sun, moon, and rising signs, and then comparing them to your own; in general, having signs of the same element bodes well for compatibility, as do fire and air signs together and water and Earth signs together.

That said, it’s important to remember that astrology is a complex system. Not unlike numerology compatibility, true astrological compatibility hinges on a variety of factors represented in the birth charts of two people. Taurus and Libra: Taurus can be a bit my-way-or-the-highway, potentially clashing with a Libra parent’s desire for harmony, but with some compromise, they’ll be able to strike a balance, says Cheung. After all, they’re both ruled by love- and beauty-planet Venus.

Taurus and Scorpio: On paper, Taurus and Scorpio don’t seem like they’d be a good fit: They’re opposites on the zodiac wheel.
