I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t matter how much research there is or isn’t about coffee’s impact on health—I’m going to be starting my day with it. However, I am working on ways to make it a more healthful part of my life, such as drinking one or two cups instead of five and making sure to hydrate with water throughout the day, too (coffee is, after all, a diuretic).
One of my favorite ways to get my coffee fix in the summer months is to blend it in a smoothie—and if you haven’t tried this, I highly recommend doing so immediately. Of course, you don’t want to pour piping-hot coffee into a blender, but a tablespoon or so of ground coffee really helps pack a flavor punch. Not to mention the fact that it saves me from running out the door with an obscene number of cups in the morning, because my breakfast smoothie and coffee are now one and the same, living in beautiful harmony.
This delicious, nutrient-rich coffee smoothie recipe comes from Dana, A.K.A. @oatsfairy on Instagram and TikTok, and features Chamberlain Coffee (which I’m also hooked on these days), but you can use whatever ground coffee you have in the pantry.
As you can tell, this chocolate hazelnut latte smoothie is creamy, dreamy, and will give you that caffeine-fueled boost in energy at any time of day. Truly, what else do you need from a beverage?
Speaking of an energy boost, know that there’s a generous amount of protein in this smoothie, thanks to the protein powder and flax. (Flax also offers a great omega-3 boost as well to boost your heart, brain, and gut health.) The combo of flax, coffee, bananas and nuts also is great for your digestive tract and cardiovascular system, while the bananas pack a powerful dose of potassium—nearly 20 percent of your daily needs—to support your morning workout, hydration needs, or yet another Manic Monday at the office. Look out, cold brew: Your summertime iced coffee habit will never be the same once you taste this creamy concoction.
While the hazelnut butter is perfect for achieving Nutella vibes, almond, peanut, or even cashew butter will also work well here. And same goes for the nut milk—if you’re more of an oat or soy milk fan than almond, have at it (extra perk: you’ll be dialing up the protein content of the drink even further).
