Several frozen waffle brands are being recalled after a potential listeria outbreak. Major supermarkets are warning consumers that may have purchased frozen waffles recently.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the voluntary recall by TreeHouse Foods, an Illinois-based manufacturer, after routine testing found that one of its facilities may have listeria contamination. The company provides frozen waffle products to grocery store giants including Walmart, Target, Publix, Food Lion, Hannaford, and Tops. Treehouse Foods also produces frozen waffles for other brands including Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth, and Foodhold.

This latest recall comes after a separate listeria outbreak in September tied to poultry and deli meat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 11 million pounds of meat were recalled, and the contamination resulted in 10 deaths across 19 states.

Listeria symptoms are similar to flu symptoms—fever, headache, fatigue, and body aches. An infection can turn dangerous and potentially fatal for those with compromised immune systems, older adults, infants, and pregnant people, per the Mayo Clinic. Depending on the severity of infection, mild symptoms may resolve on their own, while serious infections require antibiotics.

Consumers should check their freezers for any frozen waffle products manufactured by TreeHouse Foods and throw them away, or return them to the store for a refund. So far there have been no confirmed reports of illness from the frozen waffles.
