The Ultimate Guide to Parent-Child Compatibility in Astrology for Every Zodiac Pairing
To begin unpacking your relationship with your parents, you'll want to look at your sun sign (aka the sign you'd read a horoscope for) and your moon sign, says astrologer Kirah Tabourn, host of the podcast Cosmic Guidance for All and cofounder of astrology dating app Stars Align. Where the sun typically represents the father in astrology, the moon usually represents the mother. But “removing the gender binary from the equation, the sun is also often seen as representing the more visible or external parent, who might be more career-oriented, and the moon can represent the more nurturing parental type,” she says.

Other chart placements (like the sign of your fourth astrological house) can offer further insight into how you perceive your parent(s) and the roles they may play in the plot of your life (more on that below). But in order to determine your parent-child compatibility with your own parents, you'll need to examine parts of their charts, too.
As with any exercise in astrological compatibility, you'll want to look at their "big three," says astrologer Babs Cheung. That means considering their sun, moon, and rising signs, and then comparing them to your own; in general, having signs of the same element bodes well for compatibility, as do fire and air signs together and water and Earth signs together.

That said, it’s important to remember that astrology is a complex system. Not unlike numerology compatibility, true astrological compatibility hinges on a variety of factors represented in the birth charts of two people. Naturally, your upbringing and childhood environment (and that of your parents) will also shape your overall relationship and compatibility with your parents. (To get a better sense of who your parents are as people, start by asking your parents these 30 questions.)
Even so, considering the compatibility of your sun sign with that of your mother and/or father can help you figure out why your relationship has unfolded in the way it has, and how to improve it, too. Below, you'll find intel on parent-child compatibility for each zodiac pairing (look for your own zodiac sign, then find your mom or dad's sign in that section) from Cheung, as well as insight into what your birth chart says about your perception of your parents and how astrology influences parenting style.

Aries child compatibility
Aries and Aries: Aries people are fiery, independent, and adventurous. Put them together in a parent-child dynamic, and you'll have a highly energetic relationship—for better or worse. “They're generally good, but when they disagree, it's like the end of the world,” says Cheung. “When it's good, it's great. And when it's bad, it's… oh, no.”
Aries and Taurus: The impulsiveness of an Aries child may clash with a Taurus parent's stability, says Cheung. “Taurus may be quite overwhelmed with Aries, energy-wise,” adds Cheung, but they can learn from each other's strengths.
Aries and Gemini: An Aries child and a Gemini parent make for a lively and intellectually stimulating pairing, where both enjoy exploration and spontaneity. “I think it's a very supportive compatibility,” says Cheung, adding that a Gemini parent will take Aries’s spirited personality in stride, not chastising them for any slip-ups they make in adolescence.
Aries and Cancer: A Cancer parent wants an Aries child to stay their baby forever, says Cheung. The Aries child’s assertiveness might challenge the Cancer parent's emotional sensitivity.
Aries and Leo: Both Aries and Leo crave excitement and thrive in leadership roles, but Leo is willing to let Aries take the driver’s seat in discussions. “They know to give each other space,” adds Cheung, noting that they’re better at adjusting their energy when one person has a bigger temper than the other.
Aries and Virgo: While Aries and Virgo typically don’t make the best match, a Virgo parent might help balance the impulsive energy of the ram. “Aries can be reckless and act before they think,” explains Cheung, “and Virgo is very risk-averse.” In this way, a Virgo’s practical nature could provide the sign with some much-needed stability.
Aries and Libra: A Libra parent's diplomacy and grace will compliment an Aries child’s boldness. Cheung says this parent-child pairing is the ultimate party-planning duo, adding that they thrive off of each other’s enthusiasm and extroverted tendencies.
Aries and Scorpio: Intense and passionate, both Aries and Scorpio share a drive for achievement. “This is because Scorpio is ruled by energetic Mars, and so is Aries,” says Cheung. This spells trouble for parent-child compatibility, she adds, noting that they likely won’t jive unless they’re unified by one specific passion.
Aries and Sagittarius: Both Aries and Sagittarius enjoy adventure and freedom—their relationship will be anything but boring. “They might get annoyed with each other simply because their philosophies might not align,” says Cheung, but Sagittarius’s expansive mentality might help them navigate an Aries child’s temperament, helping them funnel their energy into physical pursuits, like sports, or travel.
Aries and Capricorn: Cheung says that Aries and Capricorn might clash in a child and parent relationship. An Aries’s proclivity for spontaneity will directly conflict with a Capricorn parent's structured approach. “They’re also both leaders,” adds Cheung, and as such, the Capricorn parent may struggle to keep control of the reins.
Aries and Aquarius: Aquarius’s open-minded approach to parenting can make them well-suited for Aries’s sometimes-chaotic energy. In their household, individuality will be celebrated, says Cheung, adding that “Aquarius will likely just let them be.”
Aries and Pisces: An Aries child's assertiveness may clash with a Pisces parent's sensitivity, but ultimately, they can learn to appreciate each other's strengths. “There's so much wisdom that Pisces wants to give to Aries but knows that Aries won't take,” explains Cheung, who adds that this parent-child relationship will likely grow over time, as Aries gains more real-world experiences.
Taurus child compatibility
Taurus and Aries: A Taurus child's stubbornness may challenge an Aries parent's authority, but they share a determination that can create a strong bond—that is, unless the Aries parent pressures Taurus to do things they don’t enjoy, says Cheung.
Taurus and Taurus: Taureans value stability and security—and together, they can have a nurturing, reliable parent-child relationship. “They [especially] love going shopping together,” says Cheung, who adds that simple, everyday outings like grocery trips will help instill in the Taurus child the Taurus parent’s attitudes regarding resources and hard work.
Taurus and Gemini: A Taurus child can benefit from an encouraging, extroverted Gemini parent—so long as the Gemini parent doesn’t push the bull to do things they’re not comfortable with. “The Gemini parent might want the Taurus to be more social, and the Taurus would probably not want that to happen at all,” says Cheung.
Taurus and Cancer: A deeply nurturing bond can form between Taurus children and Cancer parents, wherein the child's grounded vibe is complemented by the parent's emotional support. “They could share domestic hobbies together,” suggests Cheung, like baking sweets or scrapbooking. “It’s a very home-y, nesting energy” between the two of them, she says.
Taurus and Leo: While both Taurus and Leo enjoy luxury and comfort, Taurus children might feel pressure from Leo parents to be more extroverted than they actually are, says Cheung. “Leo could be wanting [the family] to leave the house and be outside, and be social, whereas Taurus is not super social.”
Taurus and Virgo: Both Earth signs, Taurus and Virgo form a harmonious and practical relationship, one that upholds the value of hard work and attention to detail. “They’ll get along, especially when Taurus wants to do a project,” says Cheung. “It could be something as simple as the Taurus child wants a canopy bed for their bedroom, and the Virgo parent is like, ‘Let's go to Home Depot right now.’”
Taurus and Libra: Taurus can be a bit my-way-or-the-highway, potentially clashing with a Libra parent's desire for harmony, but with some compromise, they’ll be able to strike a balance, says Cheung. After all, they're both ruled by love- and beauty-planet Venus.
Taurus and Scorpio: On paper, Taurus and Scorpio don’t seem like they’d be a good fit: They're opposites on the zodiac wheel. But they both value loyalty and commitment, and over time, that can lead to a secure relationship between the two. For that to happen, Cheung says a foundation of respect must be built: “If they put in the work, over time, they'll become best friends.”
Taurus and Sagittarius: A Taurus child's caution may contrast sharply with a Sagittarius parent's spontaneity. “They don’t see eye-to-eye,” says Cheung, who says a Sagittarius parent’s desire to travel and explore can conflict with Taurus’s love of creature comforts.
Taurus and Capricorn: These two have great parent-child compatibility, forming a relationship grounded in tradition. “Capricorn will teach the Taurus child about money, laws, and principles, and expose them to the finer things in life,” says Cheung. “This Taurus may have a very sophisticated palate for a child.”
Taurus and Aquarius: Aquarians tend to have unconventional approaches to parenting, which might conflict with a Taurus child’s practicality. In the best scenario, however, Cheung says that Aquarius can challenge Taurus’s fixed perceptions and encourage them to be more open-minded and accepting of others.
Taurus and Pisces: These two can form a deeply nurturing parent-child bond; after all, Pisces and Taurus are among the most compatible signs. Cheung notes that the Taurus child’s practicality will benefit greatly from Pisces’s compassionate, empathetic nature. “The needs of the Taurus child will always be met with the Pisces parent,” says Cheung.
Gemini child compatibility
Gemini and Aries: The Gemini child's adaptability may challenge the Aries parent's need for control, but these two can enjoy a dynamic and intellectually stimulating relationship nonetheless. “They'll probably be in cahoots with each other and have little inside jokes,” says Cheung.
Gemini and Taurus: Both Gemini and Taurus value communication and intellectual pursuits, but their shared traits end there. They’ll likely face conflicts regarding their values and interests, but if they can learn to compromise, they can form a parent-child relationship rooted in mutual respect.
Gemini and Gemini: Two Geminis can form a playful, vibrant relationship where both enjoy variety and spontaneity. With a Gemini child and a Gemini parent, there’s “a little bit of fame involved, because Gemini rules over the third house of community,” says Cheung. “They're going to be good at connecting with people in their community.”
Gemini and Cancer: Where Gemini can be restless and act on impulse, Cancer’s approach is controlled and secure. This may be a source of conflict; otherwise, a Cancer parent’s ability to empathize could foster trust between the two and encourage the Gemini child to explore their emotional side.
Gemini and Leo: Gemini and Leo can form a dynamic duo, as both thrive on excitement, socialization, and intellectual challenges. “Gemini children tend be popular,” adds Cheung, which suits Leo parents well.
Gemini and Virgo: A Gemini child can be indecisive and inconsistent, and a Virgo parent may struggle with these tendencies, since they have a strong need for order, says Cheung. However, the two signs share a ruling planet in Mercury, which governs communication and mentality. If they can talk out their needs and expectations, they’ll be able to move past this hump.
Gemini and Libra: A Gemini child and a Libra parent will both value harmony and community, and both signs have a dual nature (Gemini, as the sign of the twins, and Libra, as the sign of the scales) that allows them to see both sides of an issue. A Libra parent could be inspired by the Gemini child’s sense of self-confidence, while the Gemini child may admire the Libra parent's thoughtful decision-making.
Gemini and Scorpio: These two signs see the world through different lenses. According to Cheung, Gemini can be superficial at times, or just take things at face value, whereas Scorpio is always deep; the contrast could spark conflict.
Gemini and Sagittarius: A combination of air and fire, these two signs make for an energetic combo. Gemini’s natural networking skills and Sagittarius’s adventurous spirit feed each other, opening up a world of new experiences for the two.
Gemini and Capricorn: Where a Capricorn parent may rule their household with an iron fist, making schedule-setting and routines a priority, a Gemini child may be heady and prefer to live life on the edge, creating room for disagreement.
Gemini and Aquarius: For parent-child relationships involving fellow air signs Aquarius and Gemini, the sky’s the limit. Both Gemini children and Aquarius parents love to be mentally stimulated, and their progressive attitudes mesh well. Aquarius will give Gemini the freedom they need to figure out who they are, but they’ll also need to make sure they’re present both physically and emotionally when the Gemini child needs support.
Gemini and Pisces: A Pisces parent might struggle with a Gemini child's matter-of-fact frame of mind. They typically enjoy forming a deep emotional connection with a child, which Gemini's tendency toward rationalization might not facilitate.
Cancer child compatibility
Cancer and Aries: Cancer carries a certain level of sensitivity that’s no match for an impulsive Aries parent. Cancer feels most secure when they’re in a safe, familiar environment, which an Aries parent could incorrectly interpret as a socialization issue. “They're very, very protective of themselves,” says Cheung of a Cancer child.
Cancer and Taurus: This is a match made in the stars. Taurus loves to nurture and will give a Cancer child all the reassurance and emotional support they need.
Cancer and Gemini: Gemini is constantly seeking new, engaging experiences, and their need for mental stimulation might be too much for a Cancer child to handle. Unlike Gemini, Cheung says that Cancer prefers to have a smaller social circle, opting for a close-knit friend group rather than a wide network of friends.
Cancer and Cancer: A Cancer child and Cancer parent will make a loving, deeply affectionate pair. For Cancer parents, emotional connection is the best part of parenthood—and it's a part in which a Cancer child will be more than happy to indulge.
Cancer and Leo: Leos make for supportive, loyal, and enthusiastic parents; while their outgoing personality might seem like a bad match for Cancer, the two can make a fantastic parent-child pair rooted in unconditional love.
Cancer and Virgo: Cancer needs emotional reassurance—and a lot of it, says Cheung. A Virgo parent is nurturing in the way they provide for a child but may also be emotionally reserved, and therefore may struggle to fulfill a Cancer child’s need for affection.
Cancer and Libra: Libra sees a Cancer child's emotional insecurity as a desire for connection; while they’ll happily give their Cancer child the reassurance they need, they’ll also help them branch out socially, fostering friendships along the way.
Cancer and Scorpio: As fellow water signs, Cancer and Scorpio are similar in that they’re deeply emotional. A Scorpio parent can make a Cancer child feel protected, validating their sensitive sides and encouraging them to embrace their emotional intuition as a superpower.
Cancer and Sagittarius: A Sagittarius parent might struggle to understand Cancer’s moods or introverted nature. Still, Sagittarius could be the key that opens up a Cancer child to a world of new possibilities, like team sports or international travel—but it should stem from a place of encouragement, not a desire to change a Cancer child’s personality.
Cancer and Capricorn: A Capricorn parent can give a Cancer child the stability and structure they need to feel secure in their living situation but will likely need to push themselves in order to offer the verbal and emotional recognition their child needs.
Cancer and Aquarius: Aquarius parents might struggle to give Cancer children the kind of emotional affection and reassurance they crave. Still, Aquarius is often down to try new things for the sake of the greater good—and that can include practicing emotional vulnerability to connect with a Cancer child.
Cancer and Pisces: Pisces parents are deeply intuitive, and as such are well-equipped to navigate the depths of a Cancer child.
Leo child compatibility
Leo and Aries: A fiery and dynamic duo, both Leo and Aries share a zest for life and leadership. Their enthusiasm is matched, and while they may encounter typical parent-child conflicts about school and home life, they have the motivation and can-do attitude to tackle any obstacle that comes their way.
Leo and Taurus: Grounded Taurus could benefit from having a Leo child to balance them out. Where Taurus provides Leo with the stability and nurturing they need, Leo's outgoing, playful energy will keep a Taurus parent on their feet (and out of the house).
Leo and Gemini: Together, Leo and Gemini are the ultimate social butterflies of the schoolyard. They make a vibrant duo, connecting on artistic and communication-related fronts.
Leo and Cancer: Loyalty and empathy are two common threads found between a Leo child and a Cancer parent. Both of them are highly sensitive (even if the Cancer parent shows it more), which can bring them together emotionally.
Leo and Leo: A Leo child and Leo parent may find themselves fighting for the spotlight. But, they feed off of each other’s confidence, and for the Leo parent, having a Leo child could reignite creative fires they might have put to rest years before.
Leo and Virgo: Level-headed Virgo parents tend to be reserved—in stark opposition to Leo children, who throw caution to the wind. Differences aside, though, a Virgo parent might offer just the kind of safety net necessary for a Leo child to flourish. “They can serve as a grounding force for all of Leo's energy,” explains Cheung.
Leo and Libra: Fiery Leo is driven by ego and tends to act before they think. A Libra parent can teach them why it’s important to consider how our actions will affect people we love, says Cheung.
Leo and Scorpio: Leo children tend to be bombastic, optimistic, and unapologetically themselves. These traits can clash with those of a Scorpio parent, who may err on the side of caution and question the intentions of others.
Leo and Sagittarius: Two fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius enjoy adventure and are fueled by their excitement for life. In a parent-child relationship, they can feed off of each other’s optimism and courage.
Leo and Capricorn: Capricorn parents expect their children to adhere to their rules, which is a tough pill to swallow for the vivacious, often rebellious Leo. Additionally, Leo's innate tendency toward extravagance and focus on social status may clash with Capricorn’s seriousness.
Leo and Aquarius: Both Leo and Aquarius are independent and creative (which can make them a seamless pair), but their needs and motivations can also clash. Aquarius tends to think about what’s in the best interest of the broader collective, while Leo often thinks about themselves first.
Leo and Pisces: A Leo child’s ego could challenge a Pisces parent’s sensitivity, but they can learn to appreciate each other's distinct strengths, creating a deeply nurturing and imaginative bond.
Virgo child compatibility
Virgo and Aries: Virgo children and Aries parents don’t have too much in common. Virgo is practical by nature, and an Aries parent’s impulsivity could be off-putting. “They might find some common ground in the realm of ambition and goals, but it likely has to be through a mediator, like another parent,” says Cheung.
Virgo and Taurus: A Virgo child craves stability, and a Taurus parent can provide just that. Both signs value hard work and attention to detail, making them all the more likely to create a nurturing and reliable bond.
Virgo and Gemini: While the Virgo child’s attention to detail may sometimes contrast with the Gemini's playful and adaptable nature, they share strong communication skills (thanks to their rulership by Mercury). With mutual respect and an appreciation for each other's strengths, this duo creates a harmonious partnership where logic meets imagination.
Virgo and Cancer: The parent-child compatibility of Virgo and Cancer is next-level. Nurturing, thoughtful, and practical, both a Virgo child and Cancer parent contribute to a deeply supportive bond centered on family.
Virgo and Leo: A Leo parent can be a bit over-the-top, and their desire for attention flies in the face of Virgo's perfectionist tendencies. However, both signs are sensitive, which can help them connect on a deeper level.
Virgo and Virgo: A Virgo child and a Virgo parent will, naturally, have the neatest home on the block. The Virgo-Virgo parent-child relationship thrives on efficiency and stability. At the same time, however, these two might nit-pick each other, says Cheung, leading to some surface-level conflicts.
Virgo and Libra: Libra might struggle to understand the source of a Virgo child’s incessant desire for organization and order. Still, Libra parents believe in balancing the scales and will make sure that their Virgo offspring have what they need to succeed, relative to their peers.
Virgo and Scorpio: Both Virgo and Scorpio are deeply analytical and intuitive. Scorpio has the intuition necessary to understand the source of their child’s emotions, and despite occasional clashes over control, this pair can strike a balance of practicality and passion.
Virgo and Sagittarius: Where a Sagittarius parent will prefer to dive headfirst into a new project, a Virgo child will approach new endeavors with caution—which might get misinterpreted by the Sagittarius parent as a lack of confidence. They're not typically on the same wavelength.
Virgo and Capricorn: These Earth signs are two peas in a pod. Disciplined and practical, both Virgo and Capricorn value hard work and tradition. However, this pair would do even better with an air or fire sign co-parent, says Cheung, who can inject fun into the parent-child relationship.
Virgo and Aquarius: An Aquarius parent is usually open-minded and unconventional, so they’ll likely embrace a Virgo child’s analytical approach (even if they don’t subscribe to it themselves). They'll just need to focus on creating a stable environment for their Virgo child, who thrives on consistency.
Virgo and Pisces: A Virgo child needs routine to thrive, which may conflict with the more fluid parenting style of water-sign Pisces. However, Pisces’s emotional awareness may help them assist their Virgo child as they deal with the anxiety and nervousness that can surround Virgoan perfectionism.
Libra child compatibility
Libra and Aries: Libra and their indecision may clash with Aries’s assertiveness, just as Aries's ego can shake up Libra's peace. If they can tap into their shared enthusiasm for life, though, these two opposites can build a vibrant parent-child relationship.
Libra and Taurus: Both Libra and Taurus value harmony, stability, and aesthetic beauty. They’ll likely connect over their appreciation of the finer things in life, indulging in fancy dinners or shopping trips together as the Libra child grows up.
Libra and Gemini: Air signs Libra and Gemini are elementally a great match. They both enjoy mentally stimulating conversations and being social, but conflict may arise with regard to their communication styles, since Libra chooses their words carefully, and Gemini says exactly what’s on their mind.
Libra and Cancer: A Libra child's need for balance may clash with a Cancer parent's emotional sensitivity, which, in certain circumstances, may have to take precedence over whatever is best for the well-being of a group.
Libra and Leo: As a cardinal sign, Libra knows how to take initiative. A Leo parent's fixed-sign energy will allow them to help their Libra child see new projects through to completion, making for great synergy.
Libra and Virgo: A Libra child may find Virgo's mindset to be too cut-and-dried or matter-of-fact. Because they struggle with addressing conflict head-on, they might then become creatively stifled by Virgo’s dedication to routine.
Libra and Libra: “Libra children will be pretty focused on things being fair,” says Cheung. “If they're playing a game, and someone's cheating, they will call out that person, and make a very big deal out of it.” Having a Libra parent that also values fairness will be validating for a Libra child—but their shared tendency toward people-pleasing may pose a problem when it comes to boundary-setting.
Libra and Scorpio: Ever the charmer, Libra is able to connect with almost anyone, including the sometimes distrusting or withdrawn Scorpio. Scorpio may love that their Libra child is social, especially since they’d rather watch from the sidelines.
Libra and Sagittarius: Libra and Sagittarius share a love for adventure and a zest for life, but Sagittarius’s spontaneity and free-spirited nature might be difficult for a Libra child to embrace. Libra has a hard time tapping into their own needs and wants, and without someone to guide them, they might not learn how to advocate for themselves.
Libra and Capricorn: Libra and Capricorn don’t typically mesh well in a parent-child relationship. Libra children struggle with decision-making, and as such they might have a hard time living up to Capricorn’s expectations and level of discipline.
Libra and Aquarius: Fellow air signs Libra and Aquarius both value innovation, progress, and doing things for the greater good. As such, an Aquarius parent may be able to understand the source behind a Libra child’s tendency to people-please and give them the courage to go their own way.
Libra and Pisces: A Libra child needs stability at home, which may clash with a Pisces parent's emotional tendencies. But that sensitivity and intuition can also help them understand Libra’s compulsion to act as a mediator for friends and family. In turn, Cheung says that Pisces can create a deeply supportive and empathetic bond with a Libra child, differences aside.
Scorpio child compatibility
Scorpio and Aries: A Scorpio child and Aries parent can form an intense pairing, as both share a drive for success. “If they can find some sort of passion or niche hobby that they can bond around, that'll be perfect,” says Cheung.
Scorpio and Taurus: Both Scorpio and Taurus are passionate and loyal, and can form a parent-child relationship filled with emotional depth and stability. “This is one of those situations where they may not immediately see what they have in common, but through trial and error, they’ll realize, 'Oh, we actually do have a lot in common,'” says Cheung.
Scorpio and Gemini: A Scorpio child’s intensity might throw Gemini’s adaptable sensibilities for a loop—but if they can learn to understand the Scorpio's emotional depth, the Gemini parent will be able to help them look on the bright side of life.
Scorpio and Cancer: A deeply intuitive and emotional relationship can form between these water signs. Both signs value loyalty and family, and when together, they can create a nurturing bond filled with mutual understanding.
Scorpio and Leo: Where Leo parents crave public recognition and attention, Scorpio children tend to be introspective. But underneath it all, they are both deeply imaginative and share an enthusiasm for life over which they can certainly connect.
Scorpio and Virgo: Despite their elemental differences, both Scorpio and Virgo are deeply analytical and intuitive, making the water and Earth signs a seamless fit in a parent-child relationship.
Scorpio and Libra: These two aren't often on the same wavelength. Libra strives for harmony at all times, while Scorpio isn’t afraid to rock the boat and engage with the deeper emotions of life. The result can be a whole lot of friction.
Scorpio and Scorpio: No one will understand a Scorpio child’s point of view better than a Scorpio parent, says Cheung. These two can share a deep bond rooted in mutual understanding and empathy.
Scorpio and Sagittarius: Sagittarius is all about outward expansion and expression; meanwhile, Scorpio tends to retreat inward, taking comfort in their own inner world. A Sagittarius parent will need to approach a Scorpio child with patience, as their assertiveness could potentially cause the child to close themselves off even more.
Scorpio and Capricorn: A Capricorn parent will ensure all of their Scorpio child’s immediate needs are met, thanks to their natural role as a provider. But Scorpio children need emotional support, too; because both signs are private and strong-willed, real vulnerability between them may take time.
Scorpio and Aquarius: A Scorpio child's emotional intensity might challenge an Aquarius parent’s tendency to detach. But, if the Aquarius can make a concerted effort to listen to and acknowledge the feelings of their child, they can build a foundation of trust.
Scorpio and Pisces: According to Cheung, this pair of water signs can get along super well, forming a deeply emotional parent-child bond, but sometimes, it can become exclusionary of others, “and there might be a lack of external influences altogether,” she says.
Sagittarius child compatibility
Sagittarius and Aries: Aries and Sagittarius can connect over a shared love of exploration. However, Sagittarius has a particular need for intellectual exploration, too; a Sagittarius child might ask questions that push the Aries parent to think deeper, frustrating them in the process, says Cheung.
Sagittarius and Taurus: While a Sagittarius child will constantly want to be doing all the things, “a Taurus parent values the creature comforts,” says Cheung. “They just want to eat well, sleep well, and enjoy life.” The discord between their core values could create friction.
Sagittarius and Gemini: These are two mutable signs that love to learn new things. But a Sagittarius child could be easily overwhelmed by a Gemini parent’s communication style and assertiveness. If the Gemini parent can learn to be patient and give their Sagittarius child some space, the child will be able to tease out the thoughtful responses they’re looking for in discussions.
Sagittarius and Cancer: Cancer parents tend to focus on establishing security and stability for their kids. Free-spirited Sagittarius children could feel suffocated by their maternal instincts, says Cheung, while, on the other hand, Cancer parents could feel slighted, perceiving their child’s independence as an area of disconnection.
Sagittarius and Leo: These fire signs make for a vibrant pair and are compatible in nearly every type of relationship. Both a Sagittarius child and a Leo parent will be optimistic and enthusiastic, driven by a desire to live life to the fullest.
Sagittarius and Virgo: Sagittarius’s spontaneity will probably throw a wrench in Virgo’s need for order, but they share a desire for growth and exploration. If a Virgo parent can hold strong and maintain the systems and routines that keep a Sagittarius child on track, the relationship can thrive.
Sagittarius and Libra: Libra parents aim to be balanced and fair in their approach—which can be disrupted by Sagittarius’s impulsivity. Still, both signs are passionate thrill-seekers, and their shared love of beauty can help them form a deep connection.
Sagittarius and Scorpio: These signs tend to be at odds: A Sagittarius child's exuberant approach to life and occasional recklessness is usually a challenge for a Scorpio parent to understand and connect with.
Sagittarius and Sagittarius: In a Sagittarius-Sagittarius parent-child relationship, there’s double the adventure and double the spontaneity. This pair thrives on freedom and exploration, but they’ll need to establish boundaries and embrace some level of planning in order to enjoy both.
Sagittarius and Capricorn: When it comes to Sagittarius kids and Capricorn parents, it's a mix of adventurous thrill and pragmatism. While the Sagittarius child's wild side may sometimes clash with the Capricorn parent's grounded approach, their share sense of ambition can serve as common ground.
Sagittarius and Aquarius: Both of these signs are deeply curious and love independence, making them a seamless parent-child pair. So long as they each respect the other's sense of individuality, their relationship can thrive.
Sagittarius and Pisces: A Sagittarius child's adventurous spirit may occasionally clash with a Pisces parent's more sensitive nature, but their shared sense of empathy can bridge any disparities.
Capricorn child compatibility
Capricorn and Aries: Capricorn children are often “wise beyond their years,” says Cheung, and prefer to tackle projects by following a series of steps, rather than winging it—so they may struggle with an Aries parent's spontaneity.
Capricorn and Taurus: As fellow Earth signs, Capricorn and Taurus thrive when they feel well-grounded. Together, they can build a parent-child relationship rooted in their shared need for stability.
Capricorn and Gemini: Capricorn loves to plan, which can fly in the face of a Gemini parent's spontaneous way of doing things. Gemini might try to connect with their Capricorn child by encouraging them to play hooky with them, but they’ll need to understand that for Capricorns, studying hard and following the rules are valid sources of joy.
Capricorn and Cancer: Both Capricorn and Cancer know that home is where the heart is. While Cancer tends to be more sensitive than Capricorn, both can revel in shared values regarding tradition and the importance of family.
Capricorn and Leo: Leos love attention, but while Capricorns love getting praised for their hard work, they prefer to keep their head to the grindstone. A Capricorn child might find a Leo parent's flamboyance to be cringey, ultimately driving a wedge between the two signs.
Capricorn and Virgo: Both hard-working and methodical, Capricorn and Virgo work well together in terms of parent-child compatibility—but they’d also benefit from an air- or fire-sign coparent or sibling, just to cut through their serious demeanors.
Capricorn and Libra: While Libra and Capricorn have different approaches to life, a Libra parent will likely be able to adapt to a Capricorn child’s needs. And considering how tough Capricorns can be on themselves, a gushy hug from a Libra parent might be *just* what they need to feel comfortable and secure.
Capricorn and Scorpio: Both Scorpio and Capricorn are intense, but in different ways: Capricorn is driven by the promise of personal success, while Scorpio craves intimacy. In any case, their shared dedication can serve as common ground in a parent-child relationship.
Capricorn and Sagittarius: A carefree and playful Sagittarius parent might be a little *too* lackadaisical (at least when it comes to parenting) for a Capricorn child. Capricorns need stability in order to feel secure, and without it, they can begin to unravel.
Capricorn and Capricorn: Practical and industrious, a Capricorn parent and a Capricorn child can make for an unstoppable force—but they’ll need to prioritize family time and opportunities for emotional connection to really vibe with each other.
Capricorn and Aquarius: An Aquarius parent can help a diligent Capricorn consider the bigger-picture impact of their actions—so long as they embrace Capricorn’s proclivity for methodical, repetitive work as an inherent part of their personality.
Capricorn and Pisces: Like Pisces, Capricorn is “very observant of how the world works,” says Cheung. That said, Capricorn has a hard time tapping into their emotional side, which a Pisces parent will be more than happy to help them do.
Aquarius child compatibility
Aquarius and Aries: While other parents might feel concerned about an Aquarius child’s quirks, Aries will embrace their uniqueness, says Cheung. In fact, Aries’s can-do energy can add the fire necessary to launch their Aquarius child’s big ideas.
Aquarius and Taurus: A Protective Taurus parent might feel compelled to shield an Aquarius child from the harsh realities of the world, concerned that it might diminish the child’s spirit. In some cases, this tendency might be for the better... but in others, it could stifle the Aquarius child's growth.
Aquarius and Gemini: These fellow air signs are a progressive force to be reckoned with. Using their social charm or networking skills, a Gemini parent can help an Aquarius child bring their big dreams to life.
Aquarius and Cancer: When it comes to common ground, Aquarius children and Cancer parents don’t have much. Aquarius finds comfort in their own freedom, whereas Cancer finds comfort in their home and their relationships. This is a difference that a Cancer parent will likely run up against many a time when parenting an Aquarius.
Aquarius and Leo: These signs are well-suited in terms of parent-child compatibility. Both are independent and creative, and at their core, both want to leave the world a better place than it was when they arrived, says Cheung. A Leo parent may sometimes feel dismissed by an Aquarius child's emotional detachment, but understanding how their mind operates could quell this insecurity.
Aquarius and Virgo: Where a Virgo parent will strive to give a child structure and stability, an individualistic Aquarius child may see this parenting style as an attack on their freedom—or even a challenge. Both parties will need to learn to respect each other’s boundaries and strike a balance when it comes to freedom versus rules.
Aquarius and Libra: As fellow air signs, Aquarius and Libra are both social and curious by nature. But where a Libra parent values fairness above all else, an Aquarius child may prefer to speak their mind now and worry about the repercussions later. If they work through this difference in approach, they’re bound to get along.
Aquarius and Scorpio: An Aquarius child’s independence may clash with Scorpio’s emotional intensity and distrust of others. In the best scenario, however, the Scorpio parent will support their Aquarius child’s endeavors while keeping a watchful eye out for those who might try to take advantage of their humanitarian tendencies.
Aquarius and Sagittarius: Both Aquarius and Sagittarius enjoy exploration and adventure, so their relationship could be filled with exciting new experiences and discoveries for both parent *and* child.
Aquarius and Capricorn: A Capricorn can be serious and methodical in their parenting style—in direct conflict with an Aquarian child’s unpredictability. However, these two share a drive for success and are ambitious by nature, so if they can agree to adhere to certain expectations, they'll find sources of connection.
Aquarius and Aquarius: Who better to understand the eccentricities of an Aquarian child than an Aquarius parent? This pairing is progressive and intellectually stimulating—one that upholds independence and creativity.
Aquarius and Pisces: A Pisces parent is typically emotionally nurturing, so it may be difficult for them to adjust to their freedom-loving and sometimes distant Aquarius child. However, “what's great with this relationship is that Aquarius will be able to reset Pisces after Pisces has been out in the world,” says Cheung. In other words, an Aquarius child can be a balancing force for them when their emotions might otherwise take over.
Pisces child compatibility
Pisces and Aries: A Pisces child might feel overwhelmed (or overshadowed) by a motivated, go-getting Aries parent. According to Cheung, this pair will likely struggle to find commonality when the Pisces child is young, but time will help their relationship grow.
Pisces and Taurus: A Taurus parent will want to protect the vulnerability of a Pisces child—which is great so long as they give Pisces the space to navigate the world and learn life’s lessons on their own. “Later on, they might crave some distance because the parent may be overbearing at first, and the child wants to grow and become more independent,” says Cheung.
Pisces and Gemini: Gemini is a thinker, and Pisces tends to be a feeler. In this way, it might be difficult for a Gemini parent to empathize with the emotional complexity of a Pisces child, creating potential room for conflict.
Pisces and Cancer: In terms of parent-child compatibility, a Pisces child and a Cancer parent can form a “super nurturing, almost telepathic” bond, says Cheung. As fellow water signs, they share a certain emotional depth and sense of intuition.
Pisces and Leo: Pisces children and Leo parents will probably be “on completely different pages when it comes to their values,” says Cheung. A Pisces child tends to be very emotional and introverted, so they might struggle with a Leo parent’s love of the spotlight—but their shared traits of compassion and emotional sensitivity can serve as the tie that binds.
Pisces and Virgo: A Virgo parent will likely keep tabs on a Pisces child constantly, says Cheung, who calls them the “ultimate helicopter parents.” Because Pisces tends to be so open to everybody and so welcoming, Virgo will probably feel the need to protect them that much more, should someone decide to take advantage of their vulnerability.
Pisces and Libra: Both Pisces and Libra love beautiful things, so they can connect over their enjoyment of art, museums, or movies. Given their focus on fairness, a Libra parent will also likely advocate for their sometimes shy and sensitive Pisces child, ensuring they have all the opportunities that they deserve in life.
Pisces and Scorpio: Water signs Pisces and Scorpio tend to have great parent-child compatibility. However, because a Scorpio parent can be so protective, this pair might only want to spend time with each other, making it difficult for the Pisces child to form lasting friendships or trust other adult caretakers.
Pisces and Sagittarius: Because Pisces is traditionally ruled by lucky Jupiter, which is also Sagittarius's planetary ruler, these two can get along well. An expansive, outward-thinking Sagittarius parent will challenge a Pisces child to turn their energy into tangible pursuits, helping Pisces reach their full potential.
Pisces and Capricorn: Sensitive Pisces and stoic Capricorn might have an emotional bond that’s less-than-stellar, “but at the very least, there will be safety and security,” says Cheung. “The Pisces child will absolutely look up to and revere a Capricorn parent, but over time, they might rebel, and there might be contention as they grow up.”
Pisces and Aquarius: An Aquarius parent has the open mind and imagination necessary to navigate a Pisces child's deep inner world—so long as they commit to feeling and talking about emotions, says Cheung. These two may have disagreements (especially in regard to displaying emotions), but they can connect on their shared humanitarian outlook.
Pisces and Pisces: This relationship “could be the best pairing, or it could be the worst,” says Cheung. While these two have an otherworldly ability to understand each other’s emotions, they could also get caught amplifying each other’s negative energy on bad days. “There's no way to get out of that unless you have a third party, like a grounding Earth sign or even a fire sign in the mix,” says Cheung.
How to use your birth chart to understand your relationship with your parents
Sun sign
Your sun sign is thought to represent how you feel about your father or the person in your life who fulfills that role. “It often speaks to certain personality traits your father has, and the general archetype your father embodies in your life,” says Tabourn. A Leo sun might have a father who is particularly outgoing and gregarious, while someone with their sun in Libra might have a father who is diplomatic and considers all angles of an argument. “An Aquarius sun might have a father who identifies more with marginalized identities or the fringes of society, considering themselves an outcast or exile in some ways,” she adds.
Moon sign
According to Tabourn, your moon sign signals the dominant characteristics you perceive in your mother or the person in your life who has played that role. For example, if your moon is in Cancer, your mother might be particularly nurturing and caring, but you may have also perceived this to be smothering or over-protective. Whereas, if your moon is in Libra, your mother might be a very relationship-oriented person who loves to connect with others—but you also might see her as overly conflict-avoidant or people-pleasing.
Fourth house sign
Your fourth house (aka sector of your birth chart) has to do with your family, legacy, and home. It also represents your parents, most specifically your father and his paternal line. What’s important to know here is which sign is on the cusp of the fourth house, which astrologer Stephanie Gailing says can give you insight into how you perceive your father.
Let’s say you have Sagittarius on the cusp of your fourth house: Gailing says you may perceive your dad or his family as explorers, or people who crave knowledge and love learning. You may also come to think of him as the fun parent. Whereas if you have Capricorn on the cusp of your fourth house, you might see your father as being a traditionalist or someone who deeply appreciates structure and routine.
Which zodiac signs are good parents?
Any zodiac sign can be a great parent—just in their own way. According to Gailing, each zodiac sign’s key traits may color their parenting style and how they interact with their children, just as they do any other relationship.
For example, take Cancer: the nurturing, protective, family-oriented sign may feel particularly motivated to cook their children homemade meals and dive deep with them during emotional conversations, while a Sagittarius parent may very well bond with their children by encouraging them to expand their horizons through reading books or taking them on road trips.
At the same time, however, the shadow traits of these signs could also play out in a parent-child relationship, much like they could in any other relationship; Cancer might be especially prone to overprotecting or babying a child, and Sagittarius could be seen by a child as unreliable at times.
Which zodiac signs love kids?
Keeping in mind that parents of any zodiac sign may love kids, Gailing says Leos in particular are known to connect well with children—it is the sign associated with the fifth house of creativity, children, and pleasure, after all. “Leo is all about that sense of levity, playfulness, and the inner child,” she says. At the same time, chatty Gemini is known to get along well with children in their adolescent stage.
If you’re curious about your own impulses to become a parent, Gailing recommends taking a look at your fifth house placements in your birth chart. “People who have a lot of planets in that house or significant planets [like the sun or moon] in the fifth house tend to have a desire to give birth to something, including children or perhaps an artistic or creative venture,” she says.
